Wild Australia at the San Antonio Zoo

Its no secret around here that we love the zoo.  And so when we heard that their theme for the summer was Australia, excited doesn't cover it.  And so last weekend we went to check it out.  I can't get over how cute it all is.  And I know I have been talking about it for over a week now, but there are Koalas and Kangaroos too!

So over the past few summers, they set out a theme.  Last year it was Zoorassic Park and there were animatronic dinosaurs and sculptures everywhere.  The year before that it was Bug Mania.  Thats where we ate the crickets.  YUM.  This year it is all things Aussie.

They turned some of the unused exhibits in to the Koalas enclosures and now there is an Australian Aviary too. They didn't stop there, even the bathrooms got new signs.  This made me laugh so hard.  And also made me think of Crocodile Dundee.

I will say that I was so bummed when I realized the glare from the sun and the reflections were gonna keep me from taking a good picture of the koalas.  There are two new guys here for the summer.  They are visiting from the San Diego Zoo and boy are they cute!  Did you know koalas can sleep for up to 18 hours a day?  Hello Sprit Animal!

Burra and Warrin are their names and I am looking forward to visiting them at least a few more times before they head home in September.  If you look close enough you can see one of them in there.  Don't worry, I asked if they were going to fix the problem and was sent a picture of the new shades on the exhibit.  Boom!

We went back last weekend.  Early.  Like as in there was next to no one there.  One of the best parts about being a member is early summer entrance!  David said we are never going back to the Zoo unless we are there when it opens.  It was cooler, everyone was out and enjoying themselves before Texas and its heat happened.  It was so nice that we went ahead and explored some more! And look who we saw!

Speaking of exploring, if you wander down to the Tot Spot, you will see this sign,  This is where things get really fun.  Because not only are there kangaroos visiting from Wisconsin, but you can touch them!  It does cost $8 to get into petting area but its totally something to do because Oh My Lord are they the softest and sweetest little ladies ever.  I mean, if you can make a teenager smile, you have to be pretty awesome!

And then the keepers came over and asked us if we would like to feed them.  This kid couldn't say yes fast enough.  They were still pretty full from lunch but Alex patiently waited until one of them took the lettuce from him.  His day was made.  Big time!

I can't say that we will be paying every time we visit, but one of the workers told us that if we come back to play at the end of summer, there might be even more kangaroos.  She suspects many, if not all of these ladies are pregnant.  I thought just getting to hang out with these guys would be cool but to see a baby...  I can't wait!  I am loving this Summers theme!

Fun Fact! Australia is # one on my places to visit someday.  My plans to visit have fallen through twice now, but someday, I will make it out there.  Have you been?  For now, I will be visiting the San Antonio Zoo and enjoying Wild Australia.
